Best Reprint

Reprint by Karel Martens has made the selection of the Best Dutch and Flemish Book Designs 2015. The book was part of the exhibition of Martens’ work at the 2015 Gerrit Noordzij Prize. The book contains articles by David Bennewith and Robin Kinross.

The book was published on March 6, 2015 in the context of the presentation of the Gerrit Noordzij Prize to Cyrus Highsmith and the opening of the exhibition of the work of Karel Martens, awarded with the prize in 2012.

The exhibition and this book have been made in collaboration with the students of Type and Media 2014/2015: Elliot Amblard, Benedikt Bramböck, Bahman Eslami, Minjoo Ham, Tilmann Hielscher, Marko Hrastovec, Ekaterina Kochkina, Philipp Neumeyer, Loris Olivier, Heidi Rand Sørensen, Tezzo Suzuki, Jasper Terra, Cristian Vargas, under the guidance of David Bennewith, Jan Willem Stas and Karel Martens.

The Gerrit Noordzij Prize is given to type designers and typographers for extraordinary contributions to the fields of type design, typography and type education. The prize is awarded every three years by the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague together with the Museum Meermanno and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek under the auspices of the Dr. P. A. Tiele Trust.

Coppers and Brasses

Communication Arts features Coppers and Brasses, the Montréal studio of TypeMedia alums Étienne Aubert Bonn (TM2012) and Alexandre Saumier Demers (TM2013).

What drew us to study type design in the Netherlands is the way Dutch letterers see type as shapes created by a tool—thinking mainly about Gerrit Noordzij’s work—and their studies on how pressure, rotation, angles and tools all influence the resulting letterform.

The TypeMedia studio is getting a lick of paint this summer and some other much needed revisions. An improved kitchen. More power outlets. Fewer cables hanging from the ceiling. Sunscreens. We’re looking forward to the next academic year!
