For the second time TypeRadio organized their Chinese Whispers project. Students from the HBK Saar created sound pieces based on a specific typeface. The TypeMedia students gleaned clues and ideas from these sounds and then drew new typefaces. Sounds and faces (and students!) came together on Friday February 7, 2014 to look at the entertaining results. Thanks to the students, Indra Kupferschmid, Donald Beekman and the TypeRadio crew!

A small but heavy parcel got the attention of three inquisitive students at the KABK while sorting through boxes in the small printing workshop. They had uncovered a set of metal clichés with handwritten texts and drawings by former KABK professor Gerrit Noordzij. The students made careful prints, collected stories from some of Noordzij’s students and produced a handsome publication. A deluxe box set is also available. A unique addition to your collection of Noordzijania. Find out more and order at GeenBitter.nl
On Thursday 5 September at 4.15 p.m. at the Academiegebouw Leiden, Prof. Gerard Unger will defend his doctoral project:
Alverata, a present-day, European typeface with roots in the middle ages
The thesis is in three parts. Part one documents the conditions under which Romanesque capitals developed and were used in inscriptions, and the characteristics left behind in them by stonemasons and their clients and masters, culminating in the concept underlying Romanesque capitals in inscriptions. Part two treats of the precursors of Alverata in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and from there moves on to discuss the present conditions for and ingredients of a type design and hence to the twenty-first-century concept. Part three describes the synthesis of the two concepts and of Romanesque and contemporary elements. The type specimen, part of the conclusion, is visible evidence of the successful combination of ideas and letterforms from the Romanesque period and our own times.
A presentation will be held at the Meermanno Museum, Prinsessegracht 30, The Hague, on Wednesday 4th, at 3.00 p.m., to which you are cordially invited.
